Kaguya Book Cover

This illustrated cover is a redesign of a cover I did about a year ago. A fictional book cover for a feminist interpretation of the Japanese tale ‘The Tale of Princess Kaguya,’ written by award-winning author Madeline Miller.

From the get-go, I wanted the cover to look like a Ukiyo-e print. I did a lot of research into Heian Era fashion and other art from the time period. I settled on putting Kaguya in a traditional Junihitoe. I love the look of the multicoloured layers of fabric and thought it would be eye-catching on a cover. I incorporated different story elements, such as her bamboo origins, into the Kimono-like fabric. Looking at the meanings of different kimono patterns to put on the different layers. The Sakura, meaning beauty, ties into the character’s looks and the Uroko (triangles), meaning good luck. I also touched on her moon heritage, incorporating it into the image's background. I also hand-drew the title text, the brush texture going with the Ukiyo-e feel I wanted, while feeling a bit rebellious, hinting at the story's modern tone.

The Brief

Design a book cover featuring the titular character. Incorporate traditional Japanese elements. Cover can be a full cover, make sure to leave room for the author’s name and title.
